As On June 6, 2026, over 100 people gathered in Sechelt to celebrate the 25-Year Anniversary of the Sunshine Coast ElderCollege (SCEC). Past and present Board and Program Committee members along with community partners, supporters and local leaders heard District of Sechelt Mayor John Henderson read a proclamation declaring June 6, 2026 as “Sunshine Coast ElderCollege Day.”
In SCEC’s quarter century providing third-age education, the Society has delivered over 500 courses to more than 14,000 registrants, providing intellectual stimulation and social opportunities for seniors, while operating on an all-volunteer and self-funded basis.
As part of the celebration, SCEC proudly presented $1,000 cheques to the four Food Banks operating on the Sunshine Coast along with a $1,000 donation to the Affordable Lunch Program at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre.
SCEC also announced the establishment of an annual bursary program whereby a graduating student from each of the four local high schools will receive $1,000 to support their pursuit of post-secondary education or training, thus providing the first step in a path toward lifelong learning.
In honour of the occasion, the Society produced The Challenge of Change, Volume II, commemorating SCEC’s years 2020-2025.
