When Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603 to be peacefully succeeded by King James I, Shakespeare was a well-established playwright with the bulk of his work behind him. He had 13 years left to live. But the new century and the new king would see new blockbusters as well as lighter fare.
We’ll look at how the events of this time gave rise to Macbeth, King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra, as well as the later “romances”.
