“Online health info: sifting the facts from the fake” was an idea that came from my own recognition that as a person with a career in the medical sciences when either a friend/family member has received a serious health diagnosis I am often asked for information about the diagnosis or treatment. I routinely go online to trusted websites to gather reliable, factual information that helps me understand the medical issue at hand. Seniors who have taken minimal science courses, or have taken them some time ago, may be less confident in sifting the online facts from the fake when researching a health diagnosis.
This course will introduce participants to a series of common health scenarios that can affect seniors, and it will guide participants in how to search reliable online sites for background health information. They will practice talking to others about the information they find online using easily understandable lay terms. In addition, they will practice how to ask useful questions of their doctors.
Each session will provide participants with handouts to which they can add their own notes.
