Scientists working in the field of “Earth Systems” recently reported that six of the nine critical system boundaries that have maintained planet Earth in a stable state for the past 10,000 years, have now been breached. Climate, Biosphere, Land, Freshwater, Biochemical flows and “Novel entities” are all now outside of their safe operating spaces, with Ocean Acidification teetering on the brink. With this updated report as background, the class will revisit the “Anthropocene epoch”. The “Age of Humans”, the recognition that humanity has become so numerous, our technologies so powerful, and our societies so interconnected that WE have actually become a force of nature.
