Ageism is seen as one of the most prevalent discriminations of our age, resulting in personal, community and societal loss if not countered. The BC Association of Community Response Networks (BC – CRN) is a provincial organization countering ageism and any abuse of adults. The Association has produced presentations on Ageism, on Adult Abuse, and on an emerging community problem, Extreme Clutter. This 3-part course will explore ageism and its effect on older adults and their health and self-image using these three resources.
Participants will learn about ageism as discrimination, and as a risk factor in aging well. They will recognize ageism’s link to abuse and learn how to distinguish abusive behaviours. They will also learn how to support someone where abuse may be occurring, as well as to take formal steps if necessary to report the situation.
April Struthers is a Sechelt resident and Director of Knowledge Exchange, Research and Learning at BC – CRN.
