Speculative Fiction in Diverse Voices
Other worlds, other imaginaries: Diverse speculative fictions. In spite of its reputation for imagining strange worlds and cultures in far away lands, places, and times, much of mainstream science fiction and fantasy still replicate the power dynamics and social hierarchies of our own world. This course introduces participants to an alternative range of speculative fiction texts that take up issues of race, Indigeneity, sexuality, gender, ability, and religion from writers and communities often excluded from more canonical conversations about literatures of the fantastic, and why that matters to readers today.
