Sunshine Coast ElderCollege takes great pleasure in announcing that volunteer and former Program Committee Chair, Laurean Reid, has been awarded the prestigious Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers . This is a Canadian decoration to honour volunteers who have made a significant and continual contribution to their community.
ElderCollege nominated Red for the medal and the nomination was endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Association for Community Living based on Reid’s long and dedicated work for both organizations.
Reid’s volunteer work over four decades extends well beyond these two organizations to include the Rotary Cub, the Salmonid Enhancement Society, the Hospice and the Sechelt Hospital Foundation. A qualified registered nurse, Reid has applied her professional and administrative skills toward making our community better.
Reid elected to have her medal presented in Sechelt by Her Worship, Mayor Darnelda Siegers, who was standing in for the Governor General. The ceremony took place at the Seaside Centre on January `10, 2020, with over 100 guests in attendance. This heartwarming event concluded with a reception and cake cutting.
The medal is an official Canadian honour created by the Crown and as such is part of the Canadian honours system administered by the Chancellery of Honours, part of the Office of the Secretary of the Governor General. Here is the link to the web page providing information about the award:
